Concert review: Bush at Stage AE

By Scott Tady stady@timesonline.com

PITTSBURGH — The ribbon of grit in Gavin Rossdale’s voice gives his rock band, Bush, a signature sound.

And now that some of the grunge has been filtered from his band’s mix — a welcome consequence of maturity — Rossdale and his Bush mates have never sounded better.

Or at least that was the case Monday, when Bush entertained about 2,200 fans indoors at Stage AE on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

Bush bookended its 90-minute set with mid-1990s hits “Machinehead” and “Comedown,” though songs off the band’s month-old comeback album, “The Sea of Memories,” stood up almost as well.

The piano-powered “All Night Doctors,” was an especially well-crafted new cut, ending with Rossdale, in an end-of-his-rope tone, asking “Were you ever my love?” He answers his own question with, “I don’t know.”

Other new album standouts Monday were “The Afterlife,” “Heart of the Matter” and “All My Life.”
