Gavin Rossdale: How I stay grounded

Gavin Rossdale stays grounded by playing shows to thousands, then coming off stage and getting his children juice.

The Bush frontman has Kingston, five, and three-year-old Zuma with his wife Gwen Stefani.

The rock band recently reunited and have been performing a series of shows. Gavin loves having his family on the road with him, not least because they remind him about what is important in his life.

‘ just had them on the road for a couple of week which is chaos but really brilliant. You know, you’ve played to 10,000 people and then you just come off stage and you have to go and get juice. It’s a real good balance to keep you on the ground,’ he laughed.

Kingston and Zuma recently had a play date with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s kids, but Gavin insists their lives aren’t always so starry. They have friends whose parents do regular jobs too, and the singer is determined for them to grow up as normally as possible.

The only thing which can get in the way is the paparazzi, which Gavin wishes wouldn’t follow him when he’s with his children.

‘ don’t really like it too much when you go to a park [and photographers follow you] but you have that choice of you can either lock yourself away behind a gate and the kids don’t see the real world. every kid has to go to the park. So we go and do that,’ he explained to UK TV show Lorraine. ‘ try to hang back, I feel like Samson getting his hair cut every time those guys shoot away.

BUSH: Gavin Rossdale Interview, Starlounge

By Elisa Ortner and Emily Barker / Starlounge

His band are currently enjoying a return to form with the release of their latest album, so it came as no surprise that Bush rocker Gavin Rossdale was in good spirits when we caught up with him for an exclusive chat.

Indeed, the band have received warm reviews for latest offering ‘Sea of Memories,’ quoted by many as their finest album since debut release ‘Sixteen Stone’ helped them do that rarest of things for a British band – crack America.

And with the album’s first single ‘The Sound of Winter’ entering the US Billboard Alternative Chart at number one, Gavin admits he can’t help but give himself a huge pat on the back.

“The incredible thing is that I can still write songs that are connected to the people,” he tells us. “Our song just went to Number One on the radio, here in America. The first song ever from a self-released record label that went to Number One. I’m proud of myself, it’s like I finally did something – I made history!”

While he’s keen to toast his band’s success, Gavin’s hellraising days are very much a thing of the past. These days the 45-year old frontman is a committed husband to No Doubt star Gwen Stefani and doting father to their two children – Kingston, 5, and 3-year old Zuma.

But with demands of their individual careers keeping them apart for long periods of time, how does he maintain such an enduring bond with Gwen?

“There is no mystery,” he says. “I think I got very lucky. I found a great girl. That helps, that’s the first big step in the right direction and the second is: treasure that. I don’t know, there’s no particular secret to that, it’s just logical.”

Gavin Rossdale: Interview UsMagazine.com

Gavin Rossdale is consistently one of the funniest and most open guys in rock. And here’s the proof: I recently sat down with the Bush frontman, 45, to talk about reuniting with the ’90s band after 10 years (their latest disc, Sea Of Memories, is out now), plus his uber-cool wife Gwen Stefani, 41, and their equally with-it tots Kingston, 5, and Zuma, 3.

US: What’s it like being back with Bush?

GR: It’s just fantastic. I’m finally back in the ring with both hands untied, and I’m back with the frosting on my cake. The cool of my beer is back.

US: What led to the decision to reunite?

GR: I’ve been waiting so patiently for this perfect reunion and I tried to do a solo record and it didn’t work… I felt like I’d waited long enough, sort of the grace period for the reunion had expired. I just decided to just go for it and I thought that if I really wanted to have as much fun as possible making music I should do it under Bush rather than anything else.

US: How did you guys decide what direction to go in with the sound?

GR: I had to make it so that you could play that record to somebody who’d never heard Bush before, and they could legitimately fall in love with a band. That was the intent. It is also mindful of how we got there and how it was and what people expect from Bush… You should do one foot in the history of Bush and one foot forward, and that way we remain current and vital to ourselves.
